Unemployment Information

Cutbacks and lay-offs are an unfortunate result of troubled times.  Pennsylvania’s Unemployment Compensation system is provided to state residents as a safety net for those individuals who have become unemployed through no fault of their own.  If you qualify for benefits you will receive a weekly check, along with help in finding other employment.
You should file for unemployment compensation as soon as your work hours are decreased or you lose your job.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry Handbook, individuals applying for Unemployment Compensation must meet the following requirements:

  • You are able and available for suitable work
  • You are registered for work with Pennsylvania CareerLink
  • You earned enough wages to qualify for compensation & have sufficient credit weeks
  • You performed services covered by the Unemployment Compensation law for an employer that is required by the Unemployment Compensation Law to pay, or elects to pay, into the Unemployment Compensation fund
  • You are unemployed due to circumstances beyond your control

These are not the only factors that are used to determine eligibility for unemployment compensation.  For more information, and to file an initial application for benefits, contact the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.
It is important to note that there are certain factors that will disqualify you from receiving Unemployment Compensation.  Some of the most common are:

  • Intentional misconduct on the job
  • Leaving your job voluntarily without a valid reason
  • Refusing full-time employment

Even if you have been initially disqualified, in many cases an experienced attorney may be able to appeal the decision and earn you the benefits you deserve.
